Blue Ridge Parkway Bed And Breakfast And Scenery

By Betty Jackson

The Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smokey National Parks are two beautiful sights located in the area. Whereas, Shenandoah, a neighboring National park also has some beautiful scenery. When looking for lodging in the area, The Blue Ridge Parkway Bed and Breakfast is just one of a number of options.

The roadway is quite scenic because of the ridge where the main road is located. When it comes to hiking, the road is a mountain road which is part of the Appalachian mountains and trail. As such, there are a number of trail heads where drivers can park to get a first hand few of the area. While Shenandoah National Park offers Skyline Drive as a scenic route, there is often nothing considered more scenic in the United States than Great Smokey Mountains National park.

Two of the most scenic areas in the country are Great Smokey Mountain National Park and Shenandoah National Park. The National Forest Services owns and maintains much of the land in this area. Whereas, much of the property along side the road belongs to the National Forest service. As such, whether desiring to camp in a National park for a fee, or free of charge in a National Forest, both options are available in this area.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was responsible for building the roadway and a number of other National parks in the United States. Originally known as the Appalachian Scenic Highway, the name was latter changed. The construction was mostly completed by a number of contract employees working under the guidance of the federal government.

In 1935, construction began on the highway. After which, in 1936, Congress authorized the project and change the name to its current inception. At that time, additional construction projects began on the park as well as the roadway and trails. It was also at this time the road was dedicated as a National parkway.

While the parkway is quite beautiful, the history behind the development is mixed. For, while the construction project created a number of new jobs, there were also many residents whom lost homes and land during the process. In addition, commercial travel was rerouted to back and side roads, thus taking longer to make scheduled deliveries. In addition, there was a Cherokee Indian Reservation along the route which was also impacted by construction of the roadway.

During this time, residents could no longer build on lands without permission, even when the individuals were land owners. Whereas, a great deal of land was also blocked from agricultural use. As such, regardless of the addition of jobs, the area still took a major economic downtown.

While there may have been people displaced, deliveries delayed and other issues, there is now a beautiful roadway and park as a result. As such, travelers need to realize the sacrifices which were made during the establishment of these and other National parks. For, while the parks offer a great deal of fun, it is important to remember and give thanks to all those whom made such beautiful scenery and fun possible.
